Quasinormal modes of d-dimensional spherical black holes with a near extreme cosmological constant

Recent observational results suggest that the universe in large scale is described by an Einstein equation with an (at least effective) cosmological constant. In this context, the dynamics of fields in spacetimes which are not asymptotically flat has taken on new importance. Quasinormal modes are a fundamental part of this dynamics. In general, perturbations in the spacetime exterior of a black hole are followed by oscillations which decay exponentially in time. Roughly speaking, these are quasinormal modes, complex frequency modes which carry information about the background geometry, and are independent of the initial perturbation. The characterization of the quasinormal modes originated from compact objects are of particular relevance in gravitational wave astronomy [1]. Their detection is expected to be realized through gravitational wave observations in the near future. In asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes, the antide Sitter/conformal field theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence [2] plays a very important role. In this framework, a link is established among the quasinormal frequencies of a test field in AdS black holes and the decay rates in the dual field theory. The first study of the scalar quasinormal modes in AdS space was performed by Chan and Mann [3]. For Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black holes, exact expressions for the quasinormal modes were obtained by Cardoso and Lemos for scalar, electromagnetic, and Weyl perturbations [4]. In this context, the connection of CFT and quasinormal modes was explored by Birmingham et al. [5]. The problem in higher dimensions was considered by Horowitz and Hubeny [6]. Their basic results were confirmed in [7] by direct calculation of the wave functions. Some other perturbations in AdS backgrounds were treated in [8]. For asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes, similar conjectures have been formulated. Strominger [9] proposed a holographic duality relating quantum gravity on ddimensional de Sitter space (dSd) to a conformal field the-

Electromagnetic quasinormal modes of D-dimensional black holes II
By using the sixth order WKB approximation we calculate for an electromagnetic field propagating in D-dimensional Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild de Sitter (SdS) black holes its quasinormal (QN) frequencies for the fundamental mode and first overtones. We study the dependence of these QN frequencies on the value of the cosmological constant and the spacetime dimension. We also compare with the ...
متن کاملQuasinormal-mode spectrum of Kerr black holes and its geometric interpretation
There is a well-known, intuitive geometric correspondence between high-frequency quasinormal modes of Schwarzschild black holes and null geodesics that reside on the light ring (often called spherical photon orbits): the real part of the mode’s frequency relates to the geodesic’s orbital frequency, and the imaginary part of the frequency corresponds to the Lyapunov exponent of the orbit. For sl...
متن کاملElectromagnetic quasinormal modes of D-dimensional black holes
Using the monodromy method we calculate the asymptotic quasinormal (QN) frequencies of an electromagnetic field moving in D-dimensional Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild de Sitter (SdS) black holes (D ≥ 4). For theD-dimensional Schwarzschild anti-de Sitter (SadS) black hole we also compute these frequencies with a similar method. Moreover, we calculate the electromagnetic normal modes of the D-di...
متن کاملQuantization of Higher Dimensional Linear Dilaton Black Hole Area/Entropy From Quasinormal Modes
The quantum spectra of area and entropy of higher dimensional linear dilaton black holes in various theories via the quasinormal modes method are studied. It is shown that quasinormal modes of these black holes can reveal themselves when a specific condition holds. Finally, we obtain that a higher dimensional linear dilaton black hole has equidistant area and entropy spectra, and both of them a...
متن کاملPerturbative Calculation of Quasinormal Modes of d–Dimensional Black Holes
We study analytically quasinormal modes in a wide variety of black hole spacetimes, including d–dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes and non-asymptotically flat spacetimes (particular attention has been paid to the four dimensional case). We extend the analytical calculation to include first-order corrections to analytical expressions for quasinormal mode frequencies by making use of a mo...
